F.L.O.W.™ — Design your influence

You have good safety proposals. The question is whether anyone will act on them.

Being technically correct is essential. But it is not always enough to move an organisation. F.L.O.W.™ helps you design influence with the same care you apply to your technical work.

The reality

You see the risk before others do. But your message does not always land.

You understand the systems, the interfaces, the margins that quietly erode over time. And yet, too often, your insight is acknowledged politely — and then parked. Not because you are wrong. But because being right is not enough.

📋

Good proposals die in meetings

You have built the case. The data is solid. The risk is real. But the decision does not get made. Or it gets made and nothing happens. The frustration compounds over time.

🔗

Influence is not part of the job description

Nobody trained you to navigate the politics of a leadership meeting. To read the room. To connect your safety agenda to what your CFO actually cares about. That skill is expected and rarely developed.

🏋️

You are carrying it alone

Heavy responsibility. Constant pressure. Too little support. Many safety and operational leaders are burning out in silence — not because they lack commitment, but because the system does not give them the tools to succeed.

The methodology

F.L.O.W.™ is the influence framework for leaders who need to be heard.

F.L.O.W.™ helps professionals design influence with the same care they apply to technical content. It does not encourage arguing harder. It helps you understand how decisions move inside organisations — and how to make sure yours do too.

F
Frame the context

Help people see the situation before you ask them to evaluate the solution

A proposal that ignores its organisational context may be technically correct while remaining invisible. F maps what has changed, why it matters now, and what is already in the room before you speak.

L
Link to drivers

Bring the issue into the centre of the business conversation

A safety professional who speaks only in safety language may place the proposal outside the main decision. L connects your analysis to what plant managers, CFOs and supervisors are actually responsible for.

O
Optimize the message

Give decision-makers the clarity they need to act

Technical expertise often creates the urge to include everything. Decision-makers need clarity: the central issue, the requested decision, and the consequences of acting or not acting.

W
Work the relationships

Decisions are rarely made through content alone

People assess the credibility of the messenger and seek perspectives from trusted colleagues. Important proposals often require support long before the formal meeting. W builds that support deliberately.

What a live F.L.O.W.™ session looks like

★★★★★
"Go for Marieke. Make sure you have enough time, because there is a lot more she can share. It is not a one-hour session. It is really worth having a full day, a workshop. Don't make it just a lecture. It has to be more than this. Interactive workshop: I think this is where she is at her best."
Ilias Panagopoulos, Central Safety Team · Amazon
★★★★★
"It presented a framework that was not only easy to follow, but intuitively made sense. It helps you frame yourself in the leader's position and present as a collaborator rather than a dictator. A very simple model, but a fantastic way to approach it."
Chris Lewis, Global Network Leader · NSC Networks
★★★★★
"For me to encounter something insightful and new is quite unusual. The F.L.O.W.™ model got me thinking about how to message difficult findings as opportunity for improvement rather than criticism. I would say: take a jump, give it a go."
Norman Ritchie, Director · vPSI Group

The person behind the method

I started as an engineer. Twenty-seven years later, I understand that safety is always, first, a human question.

Early in my career, I took operational responsibility for a new site. Within my first month, a toxic gas release sent workers scrambling down scaffolding. Nobody was seriously hurt. I was physically sick. Not from the gas. From the weight of understanding what it means to be responsible for people.

On a different site, during a maintenance job, a frontline worker said: "Nobody has ever asked us whether we can actually do this job well, or what makes it hard."

Those two moments are the foundation of everything Be Human Be Safe is built on.
